Carl Fowler Price was born May 16, 1881, New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey. He graduated from Wesleyan University (AB 1902), played the organ at the Congregational Church in East Hampton (then Chatham), Connecticut, and was an avid local historian. As of 1910 lived in New York. In his professional life, he worked in the insurance brokerage business in New York City.

François Hippolyte Barthélémon

Born: July 27, 1741, Bordeaux, France.
Died: July 23, 1808, London, England.

Son of a wig maker , Barthélémon started out as an army officer in an Irish brigade, then went on to become a professional violinist on the advice of the Earl of Kelly. He moved to England in 1765, and by 1770 was leading the Vauxhall Gardens Orchestra. He also composed operas and other music.

Joseph Funk (1778 – 1862) was a pioneer American music teacher, publisher, and one of the first American composers.

Joseph Funk was born April 6, 1778 (though his gravestone states March 9, 1777), in Berks County, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry and Barbara (Showalter) Funk, and a grandson of Bishop Henry Funck. Bishop Funck came to America in 1719, and was the first Mennonite bishop in America. As a boy, Joseph moved with his parents to Rockingham County, Virginia, and spent the rest of his life there.

In 1804, Funk married Elizabeth Rhodes, and they had five children. After her death, he married Rachel Britton, and they raised nine children.

Joseph Funk was a member of the Mennonite Church. In 1847, he established the first Mennonite printing house in the United States, at Mountain Valley, Virginia (renamed Singers Glen in 1860). He spent most of his life in Rockingham County, Virginia. He was well known as a collector of songbooks, a reviser and updater of hymn tunes, and singing school leader. Funk and his sons were active in organizing and teaching many singing schools in Virginia.

Funk died December 24, 1862, and is buried in the cemetery at Singers Glen. Funk compiled and published seven books and periodicals:

The 1847 fourth edition of Funk's A Compilation of Genuine Church Music was the first publication by Joseph Funk and Sons at Singers Glen. The name was changed to Harmonia Sacra in 1851. The book is still is in use by Mennonites today. The Southern Musical Advocate and Singer's Friend was a 16 page monthly periodical published by Funk from 1859 to 1861. It was a forerunner of The Musical Million and Fireside Friend, a periodical published by Funk's grandson, Aldine S. Kieffer. Joseph Funk's sons continued the printing business after his death. The Ruebush-Kieffer Company purchased the press in 1878.

MAINZER, JOSEPH

Joseph Mainzer

Born: October 21, 1801, Trier, Germany.
Died; November 10, 1851, higher Brougthon (near Manchester), England.

Mainzer was educated at the Maîtrise of Trèves Cathedral. Having studied engineering, he worked in mines at Saarbrücken, but was ordained in 1826 and after a few years became an abbé. He left Germany in 1833 for political reasons, settling in Brussels, then Paris, and Britain in 1839, living first in Edinburgh then, after 1847, in Manchester. He published the Musical Times and Singing Circular. Novello took over the publication in 1844, renaming it the Musical Times.

Thomas Ken (July 1637 – 19 March 1711) was an English cleric who was considered the most eminent of the English non-juring bishops, and one of the fathers of modern English hymnology.

Born: July 1637, Little Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, England.
Died: March 19, 1711, Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
Buried: Frome, Somerset, England.

Ken trained at Winchester and New College, Oxford, and was ordained an Anglican priest in 1662. In 1663, he became Rector of Little Easton, and Rector of Woodhay and Prebendary of Winchester in 1669. He published a Manual of Prayers, for the use of the scholars of Winchester College, in 1674. He was briefly chaplain to Princess Mary, and later to the British fleet. He became Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1685. He was one of several bishops imprisoned in the Tower of London for refusing to sign James II’s “Declaration of Indulgence” (hoping to restore Catholicism in England); he was tried and acquitted. Ken wrote much poetry, published posthumously in 1721.

Awake, my soul, and with the sun

Author: Thomas Ken in Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Scholars of Winchester College, 1674.

Ken wrote this hymn at a time when the established church believed only Scripture should be sung as hymns—with an emphasis on the Psalms. Some considered it sinful and blasphemous to write new lyrics for church music, akin to adding to the Scriptures. In that atmosphere, Ken wrote this and several other hymns for the boys at Winchester College, with strict instructions that they use them only in their rooms, for private devotions. Ironically, the last stanza has come into widespread use as the Doxology, perhaps the most frequently used piece of music in public worship. At Ken’s request, the hymn was sung at his funeral, fittingly held at sunrise.

Barthélémon wrote this music for these words, at the request of an orphanage chaplain in London; it was first published in A Supplement to the Hymns and Psalms Used at the Asylum or House of Refuge for Female Orphans, printed for William Gawler, organist to the Asylum (London: circa 1785).

Born: Circa 1510, Paris, France.
Died: 1561, Paris, France.

Bourgeois followed John Calvin to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1541. He became a cantor at the Church of St. Pierre, and edited the Genevan Psalter. At one point, he was jailed for modifying some well known tunes. Fortunately, hymnists do not face such strict penalties today. Bourgeois reportedly left Geneva in 1557.
