1 And the sky and the land are finished, and all their hosts.
2 And on the sixth day Elohim finished his work which he had done; and he ceased on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.
3 And Elohim blessed the seventh day, and consecrated it, because he ceased in it from all his work which Elohim had formed, so that it itself could produce.
4 This is the account of the generations of the sky and of the land when they were formed, in the day that GOD Elohim made land and sky.
5 And no plant of the field was yet in the land, and no herb of the field had yet sprouted; for GOD Elohim had not sent rain upon the land, and there was no man to work the ground.
6 And a mist went up from the land, and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7 And GOD Elohim formed the man of dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
8 And GOD Elohim planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and placed there the man whom he had formed.
9 And out of the ground GOD Elohim made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 And a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and [upstream] from there it was divided, and became four heads.
11 The name of the first is Pishon, which flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
12 The gold of that land is good; there are the bedolach and the shoham stone.
13 And the name of the second is Gihon, that flows through the whole land of Kush.
14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel [Tigris]; it flows east of Ashshur [Assyria]; and the fourth river is the Perat [Euphrates].
15 And
GOD Elohim took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to work it and to keep it.
16 And
GOD Elohim commanded the man, saying, "Of all trees of the garden you may freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it, dying you shall die."
18 And GOD Elohim said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him."
19 And out of the ground GOD Elohim formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
20 And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper suitable for him.
21 And
GOD Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he was sleeping he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
22 And GOD Elohim fashioned the rib, which had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man.
23 And the man said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."
24 For this cause a man will leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
